Professor Richard Bryant AC, BA (Hons), MPsychol, PhD, DSc, FAA, FAHMS, FASSA, FAPS

Professor Bryant is Director of the Traumatic Stress Clinic and Scientia Professor of Psychology at the University of New South Wales. His research focuses on identifying people at risk of mental health problems after trauma, early intervention strategies, treatment strategies for post-traumatic stress, and complicated grief.  His research has resulted in many national and international awards, including the Robert S. Laufer, PhD, Memorial Award from the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies, the Distinguished Contribution to Psychological Science Award from the Australian Psychological Society, and the Founders Medal from the Australasian Society for Psychiatric Research (now the Society for Mental Health Research). 

Professor Bryant also works on many major national and international projects, including developing the Australian NHMRC PTSD treatment guidelines, web treatments for US troops returning from Iraq, tsunami survivors in Thailand, developing counselling programs for disaster survivors in the USA after Hurricane Katrina, and web-based treatments for complicated grief patients in the USA. Professor Bryant has served on both the DMS-5 and ICD-11 work groups that have written traumatic stress diagnostic guidelines. He has published over 420 peer-reviewed journal articles and 60 book chapters.

Professor Bryant was named as a Companion (AC) in the General Division of the Order of Australia in the 2016 Queen's Birthday Honours, "For eminent service to medical research in the field of psychotraumatology, as a psychologist and author, to the study of Indigenous mental health, as an advisor to a range of government and international organisations, and to professional societies."


Clinical Psychologists

The clinic is staffed by clinical psychologists, all experienced in assessing and treating posttraumatic stress reactions and prolonged grief as well as a wide range of other mental health related difficulties.
